Zero lost time incidents in 2020
Progress against 2019 Targets
Each year we set ourselves sustainability targets for the year ahead. Below you will find our progress against our targets that were set for 2019.
- 5% reduction in electricity consumption from manufacturing on a 2018 baseline per litre of paint produced.
This reduction was achieved. - 5% reduction in waste to landfill in 2019 on a 2018 baseline per litre of paint produced.
A challenging year due to some process changes meant that this target was not achieved in the UK. However, a new recycling route for one of our waste streams means that this is set to improve in 2020.
- Zero lost time incidents in 2019.
No lost time incidents were recorded in 2019 across the Decorative Europe business.
“Sustainability is about being aware of how our actions impact on the environment around us. This can be individual actions or company actions. The journey has begun, as can be demonstrated over the last 12 – 24 months with huge eductions in VOC’s, reduced energy usage and reduced waste leaving the Darwen site. We as individuals can, and will, do more, but change has already taken place with ‘sustainability’ being discussed more. It is this cultural change that will drive further improvement going forward.”

Targets for 2020
As part of our commitment to operating in the most sustainable way possible, we have set the following targets for 2020:
- 5% reduction in energy consumption per litre manufactured (2019 baseline)
- 5% reduction in waste produced per litre manufactured (2019 baseline)
- Zero lost time incidents in 2020
We are proud to have a dedicated sustainability team on site who work closely with our network of sites to ensure we are effectively managing our waste and resources in the best way possible. This is evident through our ‘Can Back’ scheme, as well as our continued work with Social Enterprise NIMTECH, who work to manage our onsite waste.
Leading the way
We strive to be the best in our arena which is why we will not stop in our bid to be as sustainable as we possibly can. In 2008, our earthbalance scheme was launched which demonstrates our commitment to being a responsible company. We are proud to have celebrated 12 years of the scheme, achieving some fantastic milestones along the way, including being the first paint manufacturer in the UK to launch paint containers made from 100% post consumer waste plastic, beating the industry standard of 25%.
