The Role of Colour in Design

Our Colour in Design CPD Modules promote thought leadership through engaging and inspiring content aimed at both residential and commercial spaces. These presentations are designed to be interactive; allowing you to select topics most relevant for you and your projects, making the most of your valuable learning time.

Our CPDs touch upon 2 of the RIBA core curriculum subjects, inclusive environments and design, construction and technology.

1. Colour Notation

In this CPD, interior designers will learn how the colour spectrum and technology can open a world of colour possibilities.  In this module designers will discover the designated coding of determining colour references with HUE/LIGHTNESS/CHROMA, critical to recognising each unique colour.

Learning objectives

  • An introduction to the history and reasoning of the Munsell 3D colour system
  • To understand how we measure colour (Colourimetry)
  • An overview of the three characteristics that determine colour: hue, lightness and chroma

2. Inclusive Colour for the Equality Act

In this CPD, interior designers will be introduced to what legislations are applicable when using colour in spaces, with key information on visual references to tonal contrasts and surfaces.

Learning objectives

  • To understand the legal framework which is the Equality Act and the code of practice references
  • To understand how colour can be involved as part of design considerations
  • To understand the importance of tonal contrast and surfaces for an inclusive space

3. Colour Application and Scheming

With an unlimited number of colours and inexhaustible ways to put them together, this module is designed to offer a range of ready – made solutions to help make these decisions.

Learning objectives

  • To understand how different colours and schemes can work together
  • To understand how colour can be used as a tool
  • To understand how colour has the ability to emphasise movement and direction

4. Colour Design for Dementia

It is estimated that by 2025, over one million people will be living with dementia in the UK, an increasing figure. This interactive CPD examines common symptoms and how the built environment can exacerbate these or help those with dementia to live well. Additionally, this CPD will offer a greater understanding of how the implications of Dementia can help guide the design within a care setting.

Learning objectives

  • Introduction to how using colour, texture and material can create a holistic environment for all to enjoy, feel safe and confident.
  • To understand the implications of Dementia with considerations at the design stages
  • To understand impact on the senses and orientation
  • To understand the effects of visual & physical impairment and key considerations for designing including LRV (Light Reflectance Value)
  • To understand colour through the lens of a Dementia client and design principles when promoting independent living

5. Colour Families

Colour means many different things in different cultures, times and individuals. This CPD will explore the meaning behind colours, how they evoke our senses and the lexicon we use to describe colour.

Learning objectives

  • To be introduced to the 13 colour categories Red, Pink, Orange, Yellow, Green, Aqua, Blue, Purple, White, Grey, Black, Brown & Neutral
  • To understand individual colour history, associations and variations
  • To understand colour usage within interior design and its impact

6. Psychology and Physiology (Colour)

In this module, we’ll gain a greater understanding into the many factors that can influence how we feel and experience colour. Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour, and colour – in this instance – is linked to a potential cause of behaviour. Physiology is how the body functions – so here we also look at how the body physically responds to colour.

Learning objectives

  • An insight into the various psychological and physiological factors that influence how we experience colour.

7. Light and Lighting

Light and Lighting offers a fuller understanding of how light affects colour in three areas: Biological, Functional & Emotional.

To understand colour, we need to understand light. Our Light and lighting CPD looks at how lighting impacts our interiors, split into 3 sections – biological, functional and emotional.

Biological -Our circadian body clock is linked to the daylight cycle-

Functional -The light required to undertake the task at hand.

Emotional – Our comfort levels within a space

In this session, we’ll explore each of these in turn to gain a fuller understanding of how light affects us.

Learning objectives

  • To understand how light affects colour in three areas: Biological, Functional & Emotional.

8. Technical Colour

Technical colour highlights the various colour spaces used in designing from screen to print and paint.

Learning objectives

  • Knowledge of the technical aspects of colour from a design point of view – covering colour on screen, print and paint.

Understanding Fire Risks Associated with Interior Coatings

Our RIBA approved, Understanding Fire Risks Associated with Interior Coatings CPD offering, promotes thought leadership through engaging and inspiring content aimed at both residential and commercial spaces. The presentation is designed to be interactive; allowing you to select topics most relevant for you and your projects, making the most of your valuable learning time.
