Crown Trade Supports Old Tobacco Factory to Reach Ultimate Fire Safety

The iconic former headquarters of Ogden’s Tobacco Company in Liverpool has met grade 0 in fire safety thanks to Crown Trade.

The Grade II listed building was transformed info affordable homes in 2018 and the latest makeover has seen the communal spaces within the property upgraded to meet new fire safety regulations whilst causing minimum disruption to residents.

A Liverpool landmark, the Queen Anne-style 19th century building dates back to 1901 and is thought to be designed by Ogden’s company architect Henry Hartley. It features a stunning clock tower and is a focal point for the local community in Everton.

It was transformed into 19 flats by Torus in a bid to create more affordable housing across Liverpool.

Communal areas of the apartments, including the entrance, doors and hallways have recently been upgraded refurbished in Crown Trade paint by Globe Northwest to maintain highest standards of safety, whilst allowing the building to remain looking its best.

The project took a total of four weeks and used 500 litres of Crown Trade paint.

To upgrade the building, allowing it to achieve a class 0 in fire safety, all communal walls were painted in Crown Trade Timonox Vinyl Matt. As well as being flame retardant, it’s also highly durable, helping to reduce maintenance cycles.

During the redecoration process, the Globe Northwest team needed to complete the work to the highest standards whilst minimising disruption to occupants. That’s why Crown Trade specified Timonox for the walls, and Crown Trade Fastflow Quick Drying Gloss for the doors. Both products have a quick drying time, with Timonox being recoatable in just four hours, and Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss recoatable in four-six hours.

The space was colour matched using Crown Trade’s Spring White – a light airy shade, ideal for creating a calm neutral effect. The colour allowed the building to maintain its stunning historical look and feel.

Kenny Rushton, Director of Globe Northwest said:

“The old Ogden’s Tobacco Factory is an absolutely beautiful building with so much history. It was really important that we were able to colour match the chosen shades in order to maintain the building, whilst improving its health and safety standards for occupants.”

Angela Hesketh, Key Account Manager at Crown Trade said:

“It was a pleasure to support the team at Globe Northwest on such a fantastic project. Ogden’s Tobacco Factory is such an iconic building in Liverpool so it was vital that we were able to supply products that helped maintain it whilst ensuring the colour scheme was perfectly colour matched.”
