Crown Paints brings colour conversation to life at Material Source Studio London
7 November 2025
Material Source Studio London came alive yesterday as Crown Paints hosted an inspiring day of colour exploration, learning and connection for architects and interior designers.
As the exclusive paint partner at the newly opened Clerkenwell studio, Crown Paints welcomed guests into its interactive space designed to help design professionals get hands-on with colour — a key theme running throughout the day’s Colour Workshop and CPD event.
Exploring colour through experience
The morning kicked off with a relaxed drop-in workshop, where designers and architects gathered over coffee and breakfast nibbles to explore the endless possibilities of colour in design. Attendees tested their perception skills with the Munsell test, a practical challenge that helps participants recognise subtle shifts in hue, chroma and light reflectance value.
One of the most talked-about experiences of the day was trying on sight impairment simulation glasses, offering a rare insight into how those with colour vision deficiencies or low vision perceive their environment. The exercise sparked thoughtful discussions on the importance of inclusive colour choices and the emotional and functional impact colour has in every space.
Learning through colour notation and technical insight
At midday, the group gathered for Crown Paints’ RIBA and BIID-approved CPD session on Colour Notation and Technical Colour. Led by Crown’s Jemma Saunders (Colour Specialist) and Lauren Burnett (Architetcural and Design Consultant) the session unpacked the science behind colour, demystifying how colour systems can help designers specify with greater accuracy and confidence.
Attendees came away with actionable insights on using colour notation as a design language — bridging creativity with technical precision to achieve consistency across projects.
A space made for creativity and collaboration
Throughout the day, visitors explored Crown Paints’ installation at Material Source Studio London, discovering The Colour Edit — a curated palette of 160 versatile shades designed to inspire specification. The dedicated moodboard area encouraged guests to experiment with real paint samples and see how colours shift under warm, cool and daylight settings.
Many were drawn to the 3D mural inspired by Crown’s Choreography palette, part of the Colour Insights 2025/26 collection. Its soft, rhythmic tones embody movement, flow and inclusivity — values that resonated deeply with the day’s conversations around neurodiversity and sensory design.

- Psychology is the study of the mind and behaviour, and colour – in this instance – is linked to a potential cause of behaviour.
- Physiology is how the body functions – so here we also look at how the body physically responds to colour.
