A Little Light Comic Relief from Crown Paints

22 May 2020

Two new murals painted in Leeds and Hull with jokes from comedians Lucy Beaumont and Maisie Adam hope to raise smiles ahead of Red Nose Day on Friday 19th March

Crown Paints is lending its support to this year’s Red Nose Day campaign, bringing colour and fun to the streets of Leeds and Hull with a series of bright murals unveiled ahead of Red Nose Day on Friday 19th March.

The colourful murals tie into this year’s Red Nose Day campaign theme ‘Funny is Power’ which aims to bring the UK together to show just how powerful humour can be through the toughest of times, by empowering people to do good through humour, fun, and laughter.

Taking centre stage on each mural is a special joke tailored to each city and written by local comedians Lucy Beaumont from Hull and Maisie Adam from Leeds. The murals hope to inspire communities to Share a Smile and help raise awareness of Red Nose Day. Money raised by Red Nose Day will support people in the UK and around the world, and help tackle hunger, homelessness, domestic abuse and mental health stigma.

Two local street artists, Spray Creative together with the Bankside Gallery in Hull and Leeds Street Gallery, painted all five murals over the course of a week. Crown Decorating Centres (CDC) in Hull and Leeds donated the equipment as well as paints from the Sandtex Trade range, which were tinted in store to match the colours of the unique, specially designed Red Nose Day artwork.

As well as donating the paint and equipment needed for this project, and working with the artists to find eye-catching locations, Crown Paints is also encouraging its employees (including CDC store teams, head office and manufacturing staff) to get involved in Red Nose Day’s Share a Smile campaign by writing their own favourite jokes on a poster and putting it in their windows. The Crown Team is hoping the joy from their jokes can bring together communities by putting a smile on people’s faces one home at a time.

Josie Cawdry, Corporate Communications Executive at Crown Paints said: “We’re delighted that we’ve been able to achieve this ambitious project for Red Nose Day and bring these fun designs to life for the people of Hull and Leeds to enjoy. It’s been a tough year and it’s really powerful to see how humour can bring us together like this – it’s something we need more than ever at the moment – so it’s great to have been able to play our part.”

Fatima Ribeiro, Executive Director of Fundraising and Creative at Comic Relief said: “These great murals really take our Share a Smile campaign to the next level. We all need a laugh now more than ever in these challenging times and I hope these local murals spread a little joy in Hull and Leeds. I’d like to thank Crown Paints and the talented local artists for supporting Comic Relief as we race towards Red Nose Day on Friday 19th March.”
