Crown Takes Centre Stage at Canolfan S4C Yr Egin – Home to the Welsh Broadcaster’s New HQ

Paint from Crown Trade’s market-leading Clean Extreme and Fastflow ranges has been used to deliver a long-lasting durable finish for a prestigious new creative industries hub in Carmarthen called Canolfan S4C Yr Egin, which is also home to Welsh national broadcaster, S4C as well as a range of companies working in the creative and digital sectors.  

The new development, constructed for the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD), has been designed as a base for a range of creative, digital and cultural companies in Wales. Welsh language national broadcaster S4C is the main anchor tenant having relocated its headquarters from Cardiff.  

One of the key aspects of the new building, which is situated on UWTSD’s Carmarthen campus, is that its many facilities, including a cafe, auditorium and performance stages, will be made available for the wider community to enjoy. It’s vital, therefore, that the interior paintwork in high traffic areas such as the corridors and other common spaces is long-lasting and low maintenance.  

Mid Glam Decorators, the main decorating contractor for Yr Egin, requested to change the original paint specification from a competitor’s equivalent durable paint in favour of Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt and Fastflow Quick Dry Gloss. Having used Clean Extreme and Fastflow previously the team was confident it would deliver the quality and longevity demanded for this project.  

Over the course of eight months the team of decorators painted the whole of the interior of the new three storey building including offices, corridors, common areas and the auditorium.  

Crown Trade Clean Extreme Stain Resistant Scrubbable Matt, which the team applied to all the interior walls, offers a true flat matt finish even after rigorous cleaning. Independently tested to ISO 11998 Class 1 scrub rating, it has a durability of 10,000 scrubs, giving clients extra peace of mind that it will stand the test of time, even in high traffic areas. And as the paint won’t start to break down, it will retain its opacity and colours will not fade over time. Not only that, but it has also been formulated to resist most common stains and is 100 per cent more stain resistant than a standard vinyl matt product.  

On the interior woodwork the team applied Crown Trade’s water-based Fastflow Quick Dry Undercoat and Gloss. Low odour and quick drying, Fastflow offers excellent opacity and a high gloss finish. By using the full Fastflow system of undercoat and gloss together, it provides a high quality, long-lasting finish and is the perfect partner to Crown Trade’s Clean Extreme range.  

The colour scheme was specified by the client with Crown tinting each of the Clean Extreme and Fastflow products used to match the specified colour palette. The fact that both product ranges are available in thousands of different tones and shades highlights that there’s no need to have to choose between performance and aesthetics.
